VLADIVOSTOK, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Shiveluch volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula twice ejected powerful ash columns on Wednesday, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

The ash plume rose to about 7 km and 8 km above sea level during the first and second eruptions respectively, while the volcano itself stands at 3,283 meters.

The ash plume extended 110 km west of the volcano, deep into the peninsula. Several settlements lie in its path.

Local residents and tourists are advised to exercise caution. Volcanic ash is hazardous to breathe and can cause allergic reactions.

An "orange" aviation danger code has been declared -- a threat to aircraft. Volcanic ash can damage engine blades and cause other harm to aviation equipment. ■
