MEXICO CITY, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Rafael Marquez will take over as manager of Mexico's national team after next year's FIFA World Cup, the head of the country's football federation said on Tuesday.

Ivar Sisniega told reporters that incumbent manager Javier Aguirre would depart following football's showpiece event, which Mexico will co-host alongside the United States and Canada next June and July. The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19.

"Rafa Marquez's role as an assistant coach ends after the World Cup at which point he will become head coach," Sisniega told reporters. "We have already had meetings and it's a plan that is in motion."

Marquez, a former defender for Barcelona and Mexico's national team, joined El Tri as an assistant in July last year. His only previous coaching experience was with FC Barcelona's feeder club Barcelona Atletic.

Aguirre began his third spell as Mexico's manager last year, replacing Jaime Lozano.

El Tri has been drawn in the World Cup's Group A alongside South Africa, South Korea and a yet-to-be-decided qualifier. ■
